Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy

Lucy is part of Generation Y, the generation born between the late 1970s and the mid 1990s. She's also part of a yuppie culture that makes up a large portion of Gen Y.
I have a term for yuppies in the Gen Y age group -- I call them Gen Y Protagonists & Special Yuppies, or GYPSYs. A GYPSY is a unique brand of yuppie, one who thinks they are the main character of a very special story.
So Lucy's enjoying her GYPSY life, and she's very pleased to be Lucy. Only issue is this one thing:
Lucy's kind of unhappy.
To get to the bottom of why, we need to define what makes someone happy or unhappy in the first place. It comes down to a simple formula:


It's pretty straightforward -- when the reality of someone's life is better than they had expected, they're happy. When reality turns out to be worse than the expectations, they're unhappy.
To provide some context, let's start by bringing Lucy's parents into the discussion:
Lucy's parents were born in the '50s -- they're Baby Boomers. They were raised by Lucy's grandparents, members of the G.I. Generation, or "the Greatest Generation," who grew up during the Great Depression and fought in World War II, and were most definitely not GYPSYs.


Lucy's Depression Era grandparents were obsessed with economic security and raised her parents to build practical, secure careers. They wanted her parents' careers to have greener grass than their own, and Lucy's parents were brought up to envision a prosperous and stable career for themselves. Something like this:
They were taught that there was nothing stopping them from getting to that lush, green lawn of a career, but that they'd need to put in years of hard work to make it happen.
After graduating from being insufferable hippies, Lucy's parents embarked on their careers. As the '70s, '80s, and '90s rolled along, the world entered a time of unprecedented economic prosperity. Lucy's parents did even better than they expected to. This left them feeling gratified and optimistic.

With a smoother, more positive life experience than that of their own parents, Lucy's parents raised Lucy with a sense of optimism and unbounded possibility. And they weren't alone. Baby Boomers all around the country and world told their Gen Y kids that they could be whatever they wanted to be, instilling the special protagonist identity deep within their psyches.
This left GYPSYs feeling tremendously hopeful about their careers, to the point where their parents' goals of a green lawn of secure prosperity didn't really do it for them. A GYPSY-worthy lawn has flowers.
This leads to our first fact about GYPSYs:
GYPSYs Are Wildly Ambitious
The GYPSY needs a lot more from a career than a nice green lawn of prosperity and security. The fact is, a green lawn isn't quite exceptional or unique enough for a GYPSY. Where the Baby Boomers wanted to live The American Dream, GYPSYs want to live Their Own Personal Dream.
Cal Newport points out that "follow your passion" is a catchphrase that has only gotten going in the last 20 years, according to Google's Ngram viewer, a tool that shows how prominently a given phrase appears in English print over any period of time. The same Ngram viewer shows that the phrase "a secure career" has gone out of style, just as the phrase "a fulfilling career" has gotten hot.



To be clear, GYPSYs want economic prosperity just like their parents did -- they just also want to be fulfilled by their career in a way their parents didn't think about as much.
But something else is happening too. While the career goals of Gen Y as a whole have become much more particular and ambitious, Lucy has been given a second message throughout her childhood as well:

This would probably be a good time to bring in our second fact about GYPSYs:
GYPSYs Are Delusional
"Sure," Lucy has been taught, "everyone will go and get themselves some fulfilling career, but I am unusually wonderful and as such, my career and life path will stand out amongst the crowd." So on top of the generation as a whole having the bold goal of a flowery career lawn, each individual GYPSY thinks that he or she is destined for something even better --

So why is this delusional? Because this is what all GYPSYs think, which defies the definition of special:

better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual.

According to this definition, most people are not special -- otherwise "special" wouldn't mean anything.
Even right now, the GYPSYs reading this are thinking, "Good point... but I actually am one of the few special ones" -- and this is the problem.
A second GYPSY delusion comes into play once the GYPSY enters the job market. While Lucy's parents' expectation was that many years of hard work would eventually lead to a great career, Lucy considers a great career an obvious given for someone as exceptional as she, and for her it's just a matter of time and choosing which way to go. Her pre-workforce expectations look something like this:


Unfortunately, the funny thing about the world is that it turns out to not be that easy of a place, and the weird thing about careers is that they're actually quite hard. Great careers take years of blood, sweat and tears to build -- even the ones with no flowers or unicorns on them -- and even the most successful people are rarely doing anything that great in their early or mid-20s.
But GYPSYs aren't about to just accept that.
Paul Harvey, a University of New Hampshire professor and GYPSY expert, has researched this, finding that Gen Y has "unrealistic expectations and a strong resistance toward accepting negative feedback," and "an inflated view of oneself." He says that "a great source of frustration for people with a strong sense of entitlement is unmet expectations. They often feel entitled to a level of respect and rewards that aren't in line with their actual ability and effort levels, and so they might not get the level of respect and rewards they are expecting."
For those hiring members of Gen Y, Harvey suggests asking the interview question, "Do you feel you are generally superior to your coworkers/classmates/etc., and if so, why?" He says that "if the candidate answers yes to the first part but struggles with the 'why,' there may be an entitlement issue. This is because entitlement perceptions are often based on an unfounded sense of superiority and deservingness. They've been led to believe, perhaps through overzealous self-esteem building exercises in their youth, that they are somehow special but often lack any real justification for this belief."
And since the real world has the nerve to consider merit a factor, a few years out of college Lucy finds herself here:
Lucy's extreme ambition, coupled with the arrogance that comes along with being a bit deluded about one's own self-worth, has left her with huge expectations for even the early years out of college. And her reality pales in comparison to those expectations, leaving her "reality - expectations" happy score coming out at a negative.
And it gets even worse. On top of all this, GYPSYs have an extra problem that applies to their whole generation:
GYPSYs Are Taunted
Sure, some people from Lucy's parents' high school or college classes ended up more successful than her parents did. And while they may have heard about some of it from time to time through the grapevine, for the most part they didn't really know what was going on in too many other peoples' careers.
Lucy, on the other hand, finds herself constantly taunted by a modern phenomenon: Facebook Image Crafting.
Social media creates a world for Lucy where A) what everyone else is doing is very out in the open, B) most people present an inflated version of their own existence, and C) the people who chime in the most about their careers are usually those whose careers (or relationships) are going the best, while struggling people tend not to broadcast their situation. This leaves Lucy feeling, incorrectly, like everyone else is doing really well, only adding to her misery:

So that's why Lucy is unhappy, or at the least, feeling a bit frustrated and inadequate. In fact, she's probably started off her career perfectly well, but to her, it feels very disappointing.
Here's my advice for Lucy:
1) Stay wildly ambitious. The current world is bubbling with opportunity for an ambitious person to find flowery, fulfilling success. The specific direction may be unclear, but it'll work itself out -- just dive in somewhere.
2) Stop thinking that you're special. The fact is, right now, you're not special. You're another completely inexperienced young person who doesn't have all that much to offer yet. You can become special by working really hard for a long time.
3) Ignore everyone else. Other people's grass seeming greener is no new concept, but in today's image crafting world, other people's grass looks like a glorious meadow. The truth is that everyone else is just as indecisive, self-doubting, and frustrated as you are, and if you just do your thing, you'll never have any reason to envy others.

«Gropello diventi la capitale del turismo rurale»

Quindici idee per migliorare Gropello: è partita nell’ambito della Settimana europea della mobilità grazie all'iniziativa dell’Associazione "Uomo e Territorio Pro Natura" la proposta di 15 interventi per una "Gropello Cairoli più vivibile e a misura di persona". «Nell’ambito del Programma territoriale La Via dei Cairoli, abbiamo pensato a 15 idee sulle quali avviare un confronto pubblico e da costruire insieme, mediante incontri ed approfondimenti per definire insieme quale Gropello del futuro vogliamo - spiega Silvia Ferrario dell'associazione - è un’ occasione per occuparsi del proprio territorio, per determinare il proprio futuro e quello dei propri figli, per lavorare insieme ad altri per il territorio nel quale si vive». Tra le proposte che verranno presentate in un incontro pubblico il 17 ottobre alla sala Cantoni si parte dal cicloturismo rurale come nuova opportunità per le economie locali, prendendo in considerazione anche la stazione ferroviaria da rendere gradevole, dalla tutela degli spazi verdi e dalla mobilià ciclopedonale. «Ci troviamo in uno dei luoghi più belli della pianura padana, al centro di una macroregione di oltre 16.000.000 di persone dove ogni fine settimana migliaia di cittadini cercano un luogo vicino a casa dove svagarsi - prosegue la volontaria - in qualsiasi altro Paese d’Europa, il turismo rurale costituirebbe per la Valle del Ticino uno dei motori dell’economia locale». Una mano è tesa anche ad aiutare l'amministrazione: tramite la partecipazione dei cittadini si vorrebbe infatti sollevare almeno parzialmente l'onere economico a carico del Comune per la tutela degli spazi verdi con ipotesi di giardini naturali e frutteti biologici. «Anche piazza Zanotti dovrebbe diventare nuovamente un luogo d'incontro e non più solo un parcheggio - conclude Ferrario - tra le proposte puntiamo anche su volontariato, formazione professionale, barriere fotovoltaiche e un piano energetico comunale, c'è tanto da fare, vogliamo coinvolgere più gente possibile». I colori del festival invadono la piazza

TROMELLO. Grande successo per la prima giornata del Festival del Colore a Tromello.
La seconda edizione sembra aver superato la prima per entusiasmo e professionalità degli artisti intervenuti all'apertura dei laboratori d'arte, organizzati ieri mattina nel cortile del municipio.
«I ragazzi hanno fatto dei lavori eccellenti - annuncia soddisfatta Chiara Fedele, una delle due direttrici artistiche della due giorni culturale di Tromello - domani (oggi per chi legge, ndr) avremo il bis con la piazza invasa dai colori e la biblioteca aperta, sarà sicuramente un'altra bella giornata di festa aoerta a tutti e soprattutto ai ragazzi». Football, Hummus and History Reporting from Tel Aviv Uefa EuroU21 2013

Young Reporters Program, the chance of life! (click here to original article within the AIPS Magazine)

This summer I lived the most important experience of my whole green journalist's career: thanks to AIPS, AIPS Europe, UEFA and Israel Football Association (IFA) as a young reporter I took part to the UEFA Euro U21 in Israel in june, 5th-19th. I was born in Argentina, one of the country that most loves football, 25 years ago, but I soon moved to Italy, another country with such a strong feeling with the most popular sport in the world. I finished my master's degree in Sport Journalism in the School of Journalism of the "Università Statale degli Studi di Milano" and I have had the occasion to become part of the AIPS delegation in Tel Aviv. We, 13 journalist from 18 to 25 years coming from all the continents were the  "lucky people". This experience changed my life and I will never stop to thank the AIPS to provided us such a great opportunity to learn, and to live the real and professional meaning of being international sport journalist.

Tel Aviv: our "football Promise Land"

The 3rd YR's Program was held during an high level international football tournament, the second time after the YR's Program organized  in Baku during the World Cup FIFA U-16. For the first time Israel has hosted a sporting event of this magnitude and thanks to UEFA we were there. Together with IFA they provided us not only the hospitality in the magnificent Leonardo City Tower Hotel in the district of Ramat Gan, but also the accreditations to all the matches in the four marvelous stadiums between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv (Bloomfield, Teddy, Ha Moshava and Netanya), and the visits to the local media as Sport 5 Channel, to Yedioth Ahronoth,  the most widely circulated paper in Israel since 1970 but also to the IFA Academy, to the Peres Center for the Peace and to the old Jerusalem as well as to Nazareth and to the the Galilee's Sea. Our association has reached during this weeks the most ambitious goal that one could have thought: a real "school of journalism" on the field. Share our ideas was the first point of the day, starting from the young reporters brain-storming and using feedbacks of our mentors, the production of articles and videos and has been successful. Several young reporters stories were taken up by the from national media: from the pictures of norwegian footballers surfing in the beach taken by Thomas (YR Norway) to the funny side of the spanish players presented by Marta (YR Spain) or to the curious story of Orr Barrouch, the Israel striker chosen for the team thanks to the internet that I discover talking with an israel journalist. AIPS, UEFA and IFA provided us the occasion to meet several top level expert: Michael Platini speak to us during the delivery of our diplomas. "Football is something that should be good to everyone, I think both the Israeli and the Palestinian children should play football together", he said. In the list of the important speakers that we've listens to there was also Hugh Dallas (UEFA Referee), Thomas Giordano (UEFA Spokesman), Pierre Cornu (CIES Senior Consellor), Michael Nees (IFA Technical Director) and Amir Ephrat (IFA Spokesman), Kevin Ashby (Editorial Manager UEFA.Com) and Josh Hirshman , Uri Sheradsky (founder of Hapoel Katamon FC),  Ronit Glasman (Israel 2013 Marketing Director).

"Sport has changed"
"You have to cover this different story in a different way", Noah Klieger, the AIPS Basketball Commission Chairman, has received us in his newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth in the centre of Tel Aviv and gave us a lesson of passion for our job from his huge experience, he's 87 and he's still writing and providing stories to his public. As he said "Sport has changed, you have to cover this different story in a different way": that's way what we have tried to do during the program. Working side by side under the guide of our great mentors, an equip of professional sport journalists, we've managed to produce our own contents trying always to find something new and doing it with quality and speed, exploiting the full potential of the modern multi-skill kind of journalist that this program required us to become. A new story, an original tv-production, sometimes also "competing with" (but much often trying to learn the secrets by) the senior journalist that are covering the UEFA Euro U21 were our focuses. If I have to be honest I think that just an experience like this can give you the exact idea of your value: you can do mistakes - as repeating 23 times your first stand up with your patient mentor waiting for the good one…, you can fail one or twice or several times, but if you want to become a top sport journalist before or later your real value will come out from your infinite passion and from your tenacity.

Journalism, a way to feel the world.
For the majority of us this was the first time we've been in Israel: we found a country really hospitable and excited for hosting such a great sport event as the UEFA U21 european competition. Sport in its different meaning is high considered in Israel, from basketball to football the importance of the competition and of the team's strength is a key value of israeli culture, for what we were able to taste. In the host U21 team hebrew and arab footballers use to play together without any tension, just cooperating to become, as a team, the real "stars of tomorrow", as UEFA slogan for this youth competition says. During the hard work that we've faced, starting from the early morning with our first meeting until the late night, coming to the hotel from the stadiums and still working on the bus to finish our articles or our video-editing the rhythm of a city that seems not to sleep has become our rhythm. As well as the taste of hummus, the color of vegetables and the fragrance of kebab has become familiar day by day. As journalist we couldn't forget, even covering a sport event, the historical and political sensitive environment in which Israel is situated: every occasion to meet local people was important for us to listen stories, positions and points of view. After the great job we've done, thanking to the mentors, to the associations and to all the people we've met in Israel we are now better journalist than before. We know how it works in such a high level event, we are prepared to do the job much more than before. With more skills, but also with more and more passion. Journalism is not just a job, it's a way to feel the world.  And we want to feel it with the same passion and the same awareness that the spanish young footballer showed us during the final match against Italy, raising their EURO U21 cup.

Grazie a questa missione ho anche imparato a guardare con più attenzione la realtà che mi circonda: avere tra le mani uno strumento cosi fenomenale permette alle persone curiose - e i giornalisti DEVONO ESSERE CURIOSI -  di fare ancora più attenzione al dettaglio. Viviamo in un mondo meraviglioso e ricco di mille emozioni, a chi non piacerebbe possedere una macchina fotografica in grado di catturare l'essenza del mondo?

With this mission I have also learned to look more carefully at the reality that surrounds me: to get in  your hands a camera so phenomenal allows curious people - and journalists MUST BE CURIOUS - to do even more attention to details. We live in a wonderful world full of a thousand emotions, who would not like to have a camera that can capture the essence of the world?

Ho sempre sostenuto che gli animali non mi interessassero da bambina. Crescendo ho imparato soprattutto dalla mia famiglia quanto sono importanti, quanto affetto sanno dare e quanto Madre Natura li abbia fatti belli! I have always said that I'm not interested in animals as a child. Growing up I learned,  most of all from my family, how important they are, how much affection can give and how beautiful the Nature has made them! The insects are often considered annoying and "useless", but as Einstein said, "After the extinction of bees, the men will remain to live about four years." Tribute to insects then! Buona la prima per la PSG Volley San Genesio che sabato (21 settembre) nell'esordio di Coppa Lombardia, primo test della stagione 2013/2014 ha sconfitto la formazione del Certosa Volley ASD (serie D) per tre set a uno. In campo a sprazzi un buon gioco si è intravisto nella formazione ospite seppure il livello di gioco sia destinato a crescere con il prosieguo del pre-campionato. Anche la giovane squadra casalinga ha fatto emergere buone positività in campo soprattutto dalla zona quattro con Gaia Monti (10punti) e Melissa Corbellini (9punti). Ad aggiudicarsi il titolo di top scorer per il PSG con 16 punti totali in quattro set la banda-opposto Andrea Galli che è stata utilizzata durante l'arco della partita sia da zona quattro che da zona due offrendo un contrattacco offensivo anche dalla seconda linea. "Chiaramente siamo ancora indietro sulla fase di preparazione e ancora manca l'amalgama necessario per mostrare un buon gioco con continuità - dichiara il direttore sportivo - buoni segnali ci sono però arrivati da alcune individualità come Andrea Galli e Tania Brusati, efficaci dal posto quattro, abbiamo ritrovato già in forma il nostro libero Lisamaria Vaghi e avvio positivo anche per la giovane centrale Silvia Grossi" "L'intesa con i centrali è già abbastanza positiva - conclude il D.S. del PSG Volley - abbiamo trovato conferme su cui avevamo pochi dubbi dalla nostra nuova palleggiatrice Beltran".

Nuova scuola materna ad Alagna

Alagna inaugura la scuola «Nonostante la Regione»

Ieri mattina la cerimonia: dopo 20 anni riapre la materna in un edificio rifatto Il sindaco polemico con le autorità milanesi «che hanno creato difficoltà»

Inaugurata la scuola materna di Alagna: la battaglia dell'amministrazione e della comunità è stata finalmente premiata da una giornata di festa per l'inizio delle lezioni a l'asilo d'infanzia che riapre in paese dopo 22 anni. «Non lo nascondo, le difficoltà che ci sono state create in Regione mi hanno creato un po' di perplessità - dice il sindaco Riccardo Ferrari durante il suo discorso prima dell'atteso taglio del nastro - per fortuna grazie all'intervento tempestivo del nostro provveditore siamo riusciti a risolvere il problema per l'assegnazione delle insegnanti e finalmente ce l'abbiamo fatta, sono contento per noi e per la nostra comunità».
La struttura accoglie da ieri (martedì 10 settembre) 22 bambini dai 3 ai 6 che verranno seguiti dalle maestre Antonella Celada e Federica Zavarise (religione): oltre ad un salone con i giochi per l'accoglienza i piccoli che arrivano da Alagna, ma anche dai comuni limitrofi, avranno un'aula per la didattica, un piccolo giardino, i bagni ed una struttura che per la maggior parte di loro sarà "a chilometro zero" come spiega Ferrari. «In questo momento di crisi noi abbiamo deciso di puntare sull'educazione dei nostri bambini, che saranno il vero futuro di questo paese – ha spiegato il sindaco in fascia tricolore per l'occasione – questo asilo è stato inaugurato per la prima volta nel 1896 grazie al lascito della famiglia Pollini rivolto proprio ad una struttura per l'educazione infantile, questa realizzazione oggi per noi è un segno di civiltà». Entusiasmo e partecipazione anche da genitori e insegnanti: «Noi non abbiamo i bambini piccoli, ormai vanno alle elementari - racconta una mamma presente - però tutti insieme abbiamo collaborato all'acquisto di alcuni giochi per la scuola dell'infanzia, siamo venuti qui all'inaugurazione perché è una cosa positiva per tutta la comunità di Alagna». «La struttura è bellissima - commenta la maestra Antonella - l'amministrazione si è impegnata moltissimo per realizzarla e adesso toccherà a noi fare la nostra parte per personalizzarla, siamo entusiaste». A Garlasco verrà rifatto il tetto della chiesa

Garlasco, cominciati i lavori alla chiesa

GARLASCO. Sono cominciati ieri mattina i lavori per il rifacimento della chiesa parrocchiale: dopo l'assegnazione dell'appalto alla ditta Edil Jolly, il Comune ha approvato l'inizio delle opere e da ieri è stato allestito un ponteggio. «Compatibilmente con il rispetto delle leggi, che nei casi di appalti a ditte per le opere pubbliche sono rigide e precise, siamo stati contenti di aver assegnato i lavori ad un'impresa del nostro territorio - dichiara l'assessore ai lavori pubblici, Francesco Santagostino - il tetto della chiesa si trovava da tempo in condizioni deplorevoli ed i lavori erano assolutamente necessari». L’edificio sacro aveva subìto diverse infiltrazioni proprio a causa del mancato rifacimento del tetto, che con gli anni ha accusato il colpo inferto da pioggia e agenti atmosferici. Secondo la leggenda, che appare anche raffigurata sulla facciata principale della chiesa, la struttura sarebbe stata fortemente voluta dai cittadini di Garlasco come ha raccontato anche il capoarea del settore tecnico, Antonio Petullo: «Nelle decorazioni della chiesa vengono ritratti alcuni garlaschesi intenti a portare i mattoni da Dorno per costruire le fondamenta - spiega l'architetto - sarebbe questo il suggestivo e storico motivo per cui l'edificio apparterrebbe alla collettività di Garlasco». E sarà in parte proprio la collettività a prendersene cura: «Per quanto riguarda i lavori l'appalto ha raggiunto i 90mila euro - spiega l'assessore ai lavori pubblici - 55mila verranno erogati dalla ditta che ha allestito l'impianto a biogas in via Mulino come forma di compensazione, mentre i restanti 35mila verranno versati dalle casse comunali».
«I lavori dovrebbero essere conclusi entro l'inizio dell'inverno - conclude Santagostino - ad ogni modo il ponteggio installato sulla parte laterale della chiesa non darà fastidio a nessuno e non creerà disagi. Le funzioni si potranno seguire come sempre e ben presto la chiesa avrà un nuovo e funzionale tetto».

La centrale porta acqua ai palazzi

Garlasco, un impianto idrico risolverà il problema dei rubinetti all’asciutto nei piani alti

GARLASCO. Nuova centrale idrica in via Santa Lucia. Dal prossimo anno Garlasco avrà un nuovo acquedotto funzionante e niente più problemi di approvvigionamento idrico. «L'iter per arrivare a questo risultato è partito due anni e mezzo fa, appena dopo la nostra elezione - spiega il sindaco Pietro Farina - l'impianto di via Santa Lucia è obsoleto e malridotto, lo dimostrano anche i disagi che hanno avuto alcuni cittadini durante i mesi estivi quando l'acqua non arrivava ai piani alti dei palazzi». L’intervento del Comune e il progetto proposto da Asm Vigevano, che gestisce il servizio idrico a Garlasco, hanno fatto in modo che Pavia Acque accettasse di finanziare i lavori, appaltati ad una ditta di Chieti per 600 mila euro. «I problemi di approvvigionamento dell'acqua verranno risolti, ieri ho partecipato al primo sopralluogo effettuato dai tecnici che si sono dimostrati fiduciosi sulle opere - spiega l'assessore ai lavori pubblici, Francesco Santagostino - i lavori cominceranno a ottobre e, secondo le loro previsioni, entro la primavera prossima la centrale idrica dovrebbe essere completata». La centrale di "potabilizzazione" di via Santa Lucia era già stata segnalata quest'anno alla fine del mese di maggio proprio da Asm per un "potenziale rischio di emergenza idrica" per Garlasco, dove si rimarcava il "grave stato di carenza funzionale degli impianti di approvvigionamento e potabilizzazione dell'acquedotto di Santa Lucia". Meno di un mese dopo l'emergenza era effettivamente arrivata con tre condomìni, in via Parini e via Reale, in cui l'acqua era stata bloccata per diverse ore. La prossima estate sarà presumibilmente più tranquilla anche se ancora non si conoscono gli eventuali disagi che nei prossimi mesi potrebbero dover affrontare i cittadini per la realizzazione della nuova centrale.

TEL AVIV, September 24, 2013 - Gino Bartali, the great champion of cycling, has been declared one of the "Righteous Among the Nations" from Yad Vashem, the official memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust. This decision recognizes Bartali's actions to help 800 people persecuted in Italy during World War II. The Tuscan road cycling champion, born in Florence in 1914, was a devoted Catholic; during the German occupation in Italy between September 1943 and April 1945, Bartali was part of a lifesaving net whose leader had been the rabbi of Florence, Nathan Cassuto; and the archbishop of the cardinal city, Elia Angelo Dalla Costa, who has also already been recognized as a Righteous Among the Nations. According to Yad Vashem, this Jewish-Christian net, which was built after the German occupation and at the start of the deportation period "saved hundreds of local Jews and the Jewish sheltered by the territories under Italian control before, mainly in France and Yugoslavia." Bartali acted as messenger in the net, hiding false documents and papers in his bicycle and transporting them through the cities, using the excuse that he was training. Even with the knowledge of the risks to his own life involved by helping the Jewish, Bartali  transferred false documents to various contacts, among them Rabbi Cassuto. In honor of Bartali there will be a ceremony in Italy in the coming months.
